A cold Sunday 5 March morning saw an enthusiastic field set off from Berkhamsted Cricket Club on the 2023 40th Anniversary Berkhamsted Half Marathon and 5 Mile Fun Run, organised by Berkhamsted Rotary Club.

Some Half Marathon runners were using the event as early season training for the London Marathon, returning to its traditional slot on 23 April. Particularly impressive was the turnout of local running clubs and schools.

Attending the event were Berkhamsted Town Mayor Cllr Wendy Conian, the Mayor of Dacorum Cllr John Birnie and MP for South West Herts, Gagan Mohindra. A surprise guest was Barry Devereux from Peterborough. Barry, a former Berkhamsted Rotarian, inaugurated the first Berkhamsted Marathon some 42 years ago!

Some excellent times were achieved: the Men’s Half Marathon Winner was Jack Eykelbosch, time 1:09:18; his twin sister Alex, time 1:21:02, was the Women’s Half Marathon Winner. Neither had run the distance before.

Local school Under 16’s swept the 5 Mile Fun run, with first home India Frost of Ashlyns School winning the Women’s Fun Run and Tom Ford (pictured) of Berkhamsted School winning the Men’s Fun Run.

Race Sponsors included Taylor Wimpey, Williams & Yates, Gade Valley Harriers, Haines Watts, Machins and Glencar Construction. Many local businesses provided benefits in kind. A real community effort.

Funds raised by Berkhamsted Rotary from the event will go to their chosen charities. Many individuals and teams were raising money for their favourite causes.
