Dacorum Borough Council is giving away thousands of packets of wildflower seeds to residents and schools to celebrate Biodiversity Day 2022.

The initiative is organised by the council’s Dacorum Climate Action Network (Dacorum CAN) which works to encourage and enable local individuals and organisations to ‘think global and act local’ to help tackle the climate and ecological emergency.

The theme for this year’s Biodiversity Day on Sunday 22 May is ‘Building a shared future for all life.’ Planting wildflower seeds at home is a perfect way to support nature locally, meaning residents will be part of the solution in helping to build a healthy future that is fit to support nature.

Adding wildflowers into outdoor space will provide more food for pollinators like bees and butterflies, as well as other insects. The more wildflowers planted, the greater the impact will be on local pollinators, as well as the birds and mammals that depend on them.

The giveaway is running until Sunday 29 May. Anyone who lives in Dacorum can enter here: www.dacorum.gov.uk/dacorumcan

Seeds are subject to availability.

To help the next generation get involved and be part of the solution too there is also a separate prize draw competition for local primary schools to win an insect sit-and-study centre complete with planters, compost, flowers and wild seeds.

Within Dacorum, there are a number of biodiversity projects, including wildflower meadows at various locations, tree planting schemes, bug hotels and bee houses. Dacorum Borough Council also has seven award winning parks which are carefully managed with biodiversity in mind.
