The Royal Shakespeare Company’s award-winning production of Matilda The Musical has arrived in Milton Keynes, bringing a magical mix of mischief, music and mayhem to the stage.

Based on Roald Dahl’s much-loved story, this spectacular touring production proves that even the smallest person can make the biggest difference.

From the opening number, Miracle, the audience is swept into Matilda’s wonderfully eccentric world. With its imaginative staging, colourful costumes and impressive choreography, the production is a visual treat that captures the spirit of Dahl’s classic tale.

At the heart of the show is Matilda, a remarkably intelligent young girl determined to stand up to the adults who underestimate her. Mollie Hutton (one of four young actors sharing the role) delivered an assured performance on press night, capturing Matilda’s courage, curiosity and rebellious spirit.

Richard Hurst is equally memorable as the terrifying Miss Trunchbull, commanding the stage with an exaggerated performance that is as hilarious as it is intimidating. Meanwhile, Adam Stafford and Rebecca Thornhill provide plenty of laughs as Matilda’s wonderfully revolting parents, Mr and Mrs Wormwood. Tessa Kadler brings warmth and tenderness to the role of Miss Honey, providing a moving contrast to the chaos surrounding her.

Tim Minchin’s clever songs are another highlight. From the mischievous energy of Naughty to the uplifting anthem Revolting Children, the musical numbers are packed with personality. When I Grow Up is particularly touching, combining beautiful vocals with imaginative staging to create a genuinely magical moment.

The young ensemble deserves special praise, delivering energetic performances and slick choreography throughout. Tim Minchin never uses one word when he can use several, and his songs are fast and furious – I’m always amazed at how the young cast keeps up. And a special nod to the adults who round out the cast of ‘schoolkids’, while playing numerous other small roles throughout.

Funny, moving and gloriously rebellious, Matilda The Musical is a triumph of imagination and theatrical storytelling. Whether you know the original book or are discovering the story for the first time, this production offers something for everyone.
