Bees, butterflies and bananas with The Justice and Peace Group

The Justice and Peace Group, Tring will be at the Apple Day in Jeacock’s Orchard, Cow Lane, on Sunday 4 October.

Members are all volunteers, living in Tring and the villages, who unite as a campaigning and fundraising group with the environment, human rights, social wellbeing and Fairtrade at the heart of all they do. The group is the reason that Tring is a Fairtrade Town (registered with The Fairtrade Foundation) and a Bee-Friendly Town. Tring is now officially butterfly-friendly too.

The group has fun fundraising and/or awareness-raising about issues around the world and close to home. Members often take part in local events – at the Tring Carnival in July, they provided a welcoming shady space for families on a sweltering day, with free craft activities for children. At the same time, volunteers were able to talk with them about the importance of buying Fairtrade goods.

They have also produced a leaflet showing where you can buy Fairtrade, locally produced or plastic-free goods. Find a copy – which is regularly updated – at www.justiceandpeacetring.org.

The group keeps busy raising funds with bingo evenings and pudding quizzes; has offered chocolate tasting as part of its Fairtrade campaign; and even dressed up as bees or bananas in the Apple Fayre Parade to draw attention to particular issues. Members also write with concerns to government, as well as engaging with the local councillors and MP.

Most meetings are held online from 8-9pm on the last Wednesday of the month. The group is affiliated to Churches Together in Tring, but is open to all.
