Castle Fields appeal closes in on milestone

Berkhamsted Castle Trust (BCT) is continuing to raise funds to save the historic Castle Fields, adjacent to New Road in Berkhamsted, and, as we went to press in the summer, had nearly reached half-way towards its £500,000 target to save the fields from development.

While this is great news, the trust says it means that over the next 12 months, BCT must continue on the same trajectory to achieve the full amount needed to save all the fields, so there is still plenty more to be done.

The recent launch of Save our Space, which uses What3Words to allocate a 3m2 piece of the fields, in return for a donation of £39, has been popular. By sponsoring a square in this way, buyers have this recorded digitally forever, either with their name or with a message or dedication to someone else. The trust suggests buying a square as a present for birthday or Christmas, so the recipient can visit their square and tell everyone it has their name on. In July, BCT received a substantial donation from a legacy, and 10 squares were bought by a man from Maryland in the US, who has since visited the castle. One square was bought with the message ‘I’m only one year old and saving this space for my future’. These fields are being saved for the future and kept in trust for everyone to enjoy.

The fields are historically important, but also provide a beautiful view across Berkhamsted and across the ancient Royal Deer Park.
