Celebrating VE Day at home

Living Magazines VE day 75

Friday 8 May marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day – the official end of the Second World War in Europe. In line with expert medical advice, VE Day 75 events have been scaled back nationally.

However, there are still plenty of ways that people can celebrate and mark the anniversary whilst staying safe at home. Dacorum Borough Council would like as many people as possible in Dacorum to get involved.

Nation’s Toast to Heroes of the Second World War

Please join us in raising a glass from your doorsteps to commemorate Victory in Europe on Friday 8 May at 3pm. Whilst giving a cheer, look out for the VE plane with its VE Day banner, which will be flying over the borough.

VE Day represents an end to nearly six years of a war that had cost the lives of millions; had destroyed homes, families, and cities; and had brought huge suffering throughout the Second World War.

Decorate your homes – create your own posters and bunting

The Government’s official 75 VE Day website has a toolkit with downloadable resources. These include VE day bunting and posters that can be printed or coloured in and displayed at home and in windows, as well as poster templates that people can add their own personal messages of support to and/or create drawings and pictures. There are also party guides with resources to help people put together their own celebrations at home, such as 1940s-style food menus and how to dance the Lindy Hop! Find out how to get creative at home by visiting the 75 VE Day ‘Get Involved’ web page.

VE Day Singalong

The British Legion invites the nation to join in a UK-wide rendition of Dame Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again at 9pm on VE Day. You can find the song words on the British Legion website and the singalong will feature on the BBC as part of its VE Day broadcast.

The Council would love to see how people across Dacorum will be celebrating, decorating their homes and marking the occasion at home by sharing images on Active Dacorum social media accounts:  twitter.com/Active_Dacorum, www.facebook.com/ActiveDacorum #VEDay75 and #HYOC2020.
