Chilterns Samaritans Cycle Sportive

Living Magazines Chilterns Samaritans Cycle Sportive

Have you wondered what goes on in the building close to Amersham Station? Your local Samaritans branch is manned by trained volunteer listeners 7 days/week. Those in need of support can ring 116 123 or call in personally. The Samaritans listen, whatever is going on in your life. Relationship/family issues, loss/bereavement, financial worries, job-related stress, college/study-related stress, loneliness/isolation, depression, illness, drug/alcohol dependency, suicidal thoughts to mention a few.

Suicide is a significant national social issue in the UK and the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45. In 2017, statistics equated to 16 suicides a day. Sadly, this includes a growing number of teenagers, male and female. We need a sustained effort within society to encourage people to open up and seek help when they need it most. It’s always good to talk and the Samaritans are there to listen.

Chiltern Samaritans rely on local fund-raising to help with the branch running costs and they have held a popular cycle sportive in West Wycombe (with help from High Wycombe Cycle Club) for the last two years. Last year over 500 riders joined in!

This year’s event will take place on Saturday 29 June and they have 3 routes, 20, 50 & 80 miles, taking in breathtaking Chiltern scenery and a few hills! Free feed stations along the routes are manned by Samaritans volunteers with home-made cakes – yum! Cyclists are welcomed back after the ride with a free burger and beer, live music and a shiny medal plus a KOM/QOM challenge on Whiteleaf Hill! All from £15.
