Conservative Leadership Candidate Tom Tugendhat Meets Conservative Members in Hertfordshire

Tom Tugendhat Hertfordshire Visit

Conservative Party leadership candidate Tom Tugendhat MP met Conservative Party members in Hertfordshire as part of his tour of local associations across the UK. During his visit, he pledged to local members and activists that as the Leader of the Party he would serve both them and the British people, lead the Party with traditional conservative values, and decisively act to bring-forward the fundamental change our country needs.

Speaking to Party members in Hemel Hempstead, Tugendhat championed what the Party could achieve when it serves the British people and leads with clarity and conviction. In doing so, he highlighted the Conservative’s education reforms, creation of Universal Credit and delivery of the best vaccine programme in the world. However, he argued the Party failed to deliver on the people’s priorities, from tax to immigration, because it lost sight of its values, lacked leadership, and chose infighting rather than delivery.

Tom made it clear that our next Leader needs conviction. The Party and country are crying out for genuine leadership, which only a disciplined Conservative Party which serves the British people can deliver with Tugendhat as its Leader.

Tom is the only candidate who can reinvigorate the Party’s duty to serve, change the Party and our nation for the better and ensure we don’t repeat the same mistake in five years time. He highlighted how he served on military operations in both Iraq and Afghanistan. In parliament, he was one of the first MPs to warn about the threat of Russia and China – and has been sanctioned by all three as a result.

Over and over he has shown he is a man of conviction and that he doesn’t just speak, but acts on Conservative principles. He refused to back the national insurance rise because it broke a manifesto commitment, and he rebelled against vaccine passports on principle. In Government, the actions he took meant more Russian and Chinese spies were arrested and charged in his time as National Security Minister than in the previous decade.

As Leader, he promised to unlock the unnecessary constraints on our country, harnessing bold reforms that will put our faith and autonomy back in the hands of the British people. He promised to unleash innovation, entrepreneurs and unlock innovation to drive forward economic growth. He would trust professionals, cutting unnecessary bureaucracy, to ensure our public services can serve people. And empower people to decide what is best for them and their families.

During the visit, Tugendhat also thanked members and activists for their dedication during the last General Election and beyond. Recognising their hard work, he promised to always serve them and put them back at the heart of the Party. To ensure members’ voices are at the heart of the future of the Party, Tugendhat has launched a members survey which will empower people to provide their feedback on how best to reform CCHQ and the Party’s wider campaigning operation.

Shadow Security Minister, Tom Tugendhat said: ‘It has been a privilege to meet members here in Hertfordshire. These next few months are critical for the Conservative Party. Our Party and our nation needs real leadership. We need someone who will put the infighting and political games firmly to an end and lead with conviction and clarity, bringing forward the conservative revolution our Party and nation crave.

‘Local associations and members are the backbone of the Conservative Party. It is their hard work and dedication that drive conservative values forward. Sadly, over the past few years, instead of fighting for these traditional values – including lower taxes, controlled immigration, and personal freedoms – we failed to act on these principles. We didn’t lead with conservatism at our heart and never acted on them.

‘Twenty five years ago, I promised to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to serve his country faithfully. And as Leader of the Conservative Party, this will not change. I will lead with conservative principles and act, creating a Party with vision and purpose that will take the fight to Labour so that we win in five years’ time. I look forward to working with everyone across our conservative family to achieve this and deliver for the British people.’
