Crackdown on Unlicensed Taxi Drivers

Dacorum Borough Council’s Licensing Team cracked down on unlicensed taxi drivers resulting in two convictions at St Albans Magistrates’ Court.

Theresa Clegg, whilst operating for Sarratt Cars, was convicted of not holding a current licence to drive private hire vehicles and for using a vehicle without a valid policy of insurance.

Mitchell MacPherson, who ran Sarratt Cars from Ryder Close, Bovingdon, was convicted of operating a vehicle as a private hire vehicle without holding a current operator’s licence, permitting the use of a vehicle as a private hire vehicle without having a current private hire vehicle licence for it and for having no valid policy of insurance .

Theresa Clegg was fined £120, her licence endorsed with 8 points, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £30 and the costs incurred for prosecuting in the sum of £450 on 7 November 2018.

Mitchell MacPherson was fined £1,440, his licence endorsed with 8 points, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £50 and the costs incurred for prosecuting in the sum of £1,059.12 on 9 January 2019.

Dacorum Borough Council Licensing Team Leader Nathan March said: ‘We license drivers and vehicles to ensure that they are safe and suitable for the public to use. Unlicensed individuals and vehicles have not had to undergo the vigorous required tests and checks that licence holders have, and therefore when we become aware of such activities we will always seek to take strong action in order to protect the public.’
