DENS Hemel Hillbuster Cycle Challenge
Gordon Short, in his 70s, from Hemel Hempstead, is setting himself a big challenge by taking on a 100k cycle challenge to raise funds for local homeless charity DENS on Sunday 28 April.
Gordon says ‘The last time I cycled 70 miles was on my mountain bike when I was 21 years old, now in my 70’s, I’m training on my new electric bike four times a week in preparation for the big day. My new bike has taken me on lots of new adventures; I’ve been cycling to places I never knew existed!’
Gordon, who is a long standing volunteer for DENS adds, ‘I have made many friends and enjoy the variety of my voluntary role, including dating and stacking tins in the Foodbank and being a support visitor; working with clients to understand and help resolve the issues they are facing. I’m always made to feel appreciated and it makes me more appreciative of the things I take for granted.’
DENS CEO, Wendy Lewington says ‘We are thrilled that Gordon is taking on our Hillbuster challenge and we’ll be cheering him on all the way. Come and join Gordon, and hundreds of other cyclists, on either a 60 or 100k route – both in the beautiful rolling Herts/Bucks countryside. All you need is a bike and a sense of fun. It’s a fantastic way to get some exercise and make a difference. In addition, you’ll be helping to highlight, the issues that homeless people face.’
Over the past three years, the Hillbuster has raised over £40,000 to help fund DENS’ integrated services. This year, with your help, DENS would love to raise even more to continue to help rebuild the lives of local people.
