Dispose of Waste Responsibly this Easter

Living Magazines DBC easter-recycling

Easter is the biggest chocolate-selling period of the year after Christmas. Approximately 80 million chocolate eggs are sold in the UK, generating almost 5,000 tonnes of card, foil and plastic.

Thankfully, the majority of this waste can be recycled in the blue-lidded bins and Dacorum Borough Council’s Environmental Services team have the below top tips for recycling this Easter:

Determine whether your packaging is recyclable or not

Cardboard, aluminium foil and firm plastic are all recyclable in the blue-lidded bin.

  • Ball small pieces of foil together so that they can be recycled more easily at the factory – a tennis ball size is perfect if possible.
  • Flatten cardboard boxes to make more room in your blue-lidded bin.
  • Remember excess recycling can be placed in a sturdy container next to your bin.
  • Soft scrunchy plastics and sweet wrappers should go in the grey bin or can be taken to selected supermarkets such as Tesco, Co-op and Sainsbury’s. Visit www.dacorum.gov.uk/easter for a quick video guide.

Bank holiday bin collection changes

Due to the bank holidays, there are changes to the bin collections. Collections will be as normal on Good Friday 15 April 2022. However there will be no collection on Monday 18 April 2022. All collections that week will be one day later than usual.

Residents can check what their bin collection changes are over the Easter bank holidays by either checking their Waste Collection Calendar or using the Council’s online postcode checking tool www.dacorum.gov.uk/mybins.

Having a spring clean?

Residents can see what can be recycled at their nearest neighbourhood recycling bank and tip by visiting www.dacorum.gov.uk/recyclingcentre. They might also want to make use of the Council’s Bulky Waste Collection Service by visiting www.dacorum.gov.uk/bulky-waste.

Preparing your garden for an Egg Hunt?

Only natural garden waste should go in the green bin – no cardboard, food or plastic (www.dacorum.gov.uk/greenbin).

The Council offers an opt-in service to collect a second green-lidded bin (or more if required). Details can be found on www.dacorum.gov.uk/extragreenbin.

Hosting an Easter gathering?

Guests should be informed which materials can be recycled in the home and where they should put them to make sure these items can be reborn as something new.
