Head to Harpenden

Batford Marquis by Steve Collins

Looking for somewhere different nearby for a day out? Harpenden has a wealth of green spaces, walks and events, as well as independent shops, cafes and restaurants.

Half an hour’s drive from Berkhamsted is the town of Harpenden.

The parks and green spaces of Harpenden are hugely important to local wildlife and biodiversity. Wander to Batford Springs Local Nature Reserve, for example, to enjoy a rare chalk-lined stream, reed fen, wet woodland, meadows, hedgerows and the River Lea. This beautiful area is home to diverse wildlife from kingfishers and egrets to various species of fish and recently reintroduced water voles. There are also accessible picnic areas, information boards, a playground and a boardwalk, and stepping stones.

Rothamsted Park by SteveCollins

Rothamsted Park is another green space of great pride to the town. Its lime tree avenue through the centre of the park – one of the most photographed spaces in Harpenden – together with wide open spaces, variety of trees, rose garden, playground and gently sloping land, gives this historic area a country park feel. Sports facilities include tennis, padel and netball courts, cricket and football pitches, and a skate park.

Harpenden Town Council has recently created a Green Loop – a circular route around the town connecting its picturesque paths, open spaces and trails to make a complete 15km walking or cycling route. It’s easy to follow in sections if preferred and is accessed via a number of points. A map is available online or in printed format at the Town Hall.

If you want to visit the town centre for refreshments, public toilets, shopping, there is also a clearly marked ‘half loop’.
