Let’s go out

Chiltern Open Air Museum Britain at War by Kevan Rosendale

Make the most of summer days by exploring gardens, museums and more, both in the local area and further afield.

Living history

Cannon blasts, gunfire and armed combat are all part of Chiltern Open Air Museum’s English Civil War event taking place on 13-14 June. This family-friendly event will see more than 60 re-enactors taking part in displays and living history camps.

On Saturday 27 June King John and King Richard will be battling for your vote on who was the best English monarch during a tumultuous period marked by the Crusades, heavy taxation and the creation of the Magna Carta.

The museum’s popular Classic Vehicles Show returns on 18-19 July, with vintage and unusual cars, vans and motorcycles on display.

Heritage crafts take centre stage on 25-26 July when the museum welcomes craftspeople from across the country. Showcasing traditional techniques and skills that have been handed down over generations, this event will give visitors the opportunity to meet the makers keeping heritage crafts alive.

During Buckinghamshire school holidays the museum has everything you need to keep kids entertained with Terrific Tuesdays. Featuring hands-on clay makes, storytelling, outdoor fun and craft activities with a different theme each week.

Living history events continue throughout August with Rogues and Highwaymen on 1-2 August, Britain at War on 8-9 August, Tudor Merriment on 15-16 August, Victorian Weekend on 22-23 August, and the Viking Raid on 30-31 August. Find out more at www.coam.org.uk.

A slower way to spend the day

In a world where everything seems to move quickly, more people are starting to look for ways to slow down and spend quality time together.

One local business offering exactly that is Canal Boat Day Hire, based at Apsley Marina in Hemel Hempstead. The narrowboat Tilly gives people the chance to take to the water and enjoy a completely different kind of day out along the Grand Union Canal.
Family on the Canal

No experience is needed. After a short handover and safety briefing, you’re in charge of the boat, cruising through peaceful countryside and quiet stretches of water that most people never see.

‘It’s surprising how quickly people switch off,’ says owner Paul Musgrave. ‘Within half an hour, phones are away and people are properly present again.’

Tilly can accommodate up to 10 people, making it ideal for families, couples, birthdays or small get-togethers. You can bring your own food, stop along the way, or simply cruise and unwind.

Day hire starts from £180 in low season, with evening hire from 5.30pm available during the summer months, starting at £160.

Located just a short walk from Apsley train station, it’s easily accessible from London and the surrounding Hertfordshire area.

Canal Boat Day Hire is now taking bookings for the upcoming season, with limited weekend availability, so early booking is recommended. Readers of Living magazine can get a discount by using code LIVINGMAGS at checkout.
