Hertfordshire Constabulary have recently welcomed 15 new Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) but they’re still looking for more!

The latest recruits, including a former lettings agent, a retail manager and a healthcare assistant, were formally designated into their roles at a special ceremony at police headquarters in Welwyn Garden City on Friday 26 November.

Hertfordshire Chief Constable Charlie Hall took time out to speak to the new PCSOs. He said: ‘I was delighted to welcome the new PCSOs to our policing family. They are now a vital cog in our organisation, assigned to Safer Neighbourhood Teams across the county and working with the community to improve the quality of life for residents and make their area safer, by proactively tackling crime and anti-social behaviour.’

The eight women and seven men followed a seven-week training programme to prepare them for the varied role, which will include everything from tracking down shoplifters, to searching for missing people and talking crime prevention with residents.

Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Lewis Cocking, who went along, said: ‘Congratulation to these officers who have passed their training to become an important part of the local policing model in Hertfordshire. They are out and about in our neighbourhoods every day, providing a visible presence to prevent crime and keep people safe. Our office, and the constabulary, remain committed to protecting and growing the number of PCSOs in the county.’

The role of a PCSO is paid and there are opportunities for people who wish to work part-time or flexible hours. It involves shift work, including working some weekends and evenings to 11pm. If you’re interested in finding out more, please visit www.hertspolicepcso.co.uk.
