Freestyle Libre for Type 1 Diabetes

Hemel Hempstead MP, Sir Mike Penning, has welcomed an announcement that thousands of people with type 1 diabetes will be able to be prescribed the new glucose monitoring system known as Freestyle Libre.

Sir Mike said: ‘This is great news and I pay credit to my constituents who have been lobbying for this. Up until now it has been a total postcode lottery and Hemel Hempstead residents who would benefit have been denied access by the local CCG.

‘I have written on behalf of constituents to the Secretary of State, the NHS and the Herts Valleys CCG about this on numerous occasions. It just goes to show that persistence can pay off.

‘I am delighted that this anomaly has been corrected on a national level.

‘Common sense has prevailed.’

NHS England made the announcement to on World Diabetes Day which tool place on 14 November. The small device, which is usually placed on the upper arm, will be available on prescription to qualifying patients.
