Give Bees A Chance Family Fun Day

Living Magazines Give Bees a Chance

Hemel Food Garden will be buzzing with life on Saturday 7 September, 11am-3pm. Join the Sunnyside Rural Trust team, the Mayor of Dacorum and friends from the bee-loving community to celebrate bees at ‘Give Bees a Chance’ Family Fun Day. Bring the whole family to enjoy a fun day of Bee-themed activities; make a Bee B & B, frame for a hive, Bee treasure hunt around the orchard and you can even adopt a bee!

There will be music by the spectacular Electric Umbrella and Dacorum Community Choir, delicious food stalls, local markets stalls, bouncy castle and the chance to meet some friendly reptiles.

The money raised at the Mayor’s fundraiser will help fund Sunnyside Rural Trust’s new Farm Shop and Animal Rescue Shelter at Northchurch allotments. Work has just begun on the foundations for the charity’s new community hub, so an exciting few months lie ahead as over 2 years of planning come to fruition.

Sunnyside Rural Trust support people with learning disabilities to acquire skills in the “plot-to-plate” cycle, from sowing seeds and nurturing plants and vegetables, to making produce to sell in the farm shops, cafe and market.

The charity is developing their site at Northchurch allotments into a training centre with a new farm shop and stables (to house rescued livestock). CEO Keely Siddiqui Charlick says, ‘The project will enable people with learning disabilities to gain more training and employment opportunities. Local schools and groups will also benefit from this project by using the educational facilities to teach children about environmental issues and growing food. The farm shop will sell zero-waste products and produce grown on site.’

The charity are always looking for volunteers and cake-bakers to help make the fundraising event a success, so please get in touch with Gemma publicity@sunnysideruraltrust.org.uk 01442 863364 if you would like to help. Also get in touch if you fancy entering the Mayor’s Carrot Cake Competition.

Help Sunnyside Rural Trust realise the full potential of this unique countryside community hub by investing in the buildings and resources to create a flagship centre. The charity is seeking support from the local community in a number of ways:

The existing farm shop is open Monday to Friday 8am-4pm so pop along to Northchurch allotments to buy your seasonal fresh produce and to find out more about the project. Sunnyside Up Café and Farm Shop off Two Waters Road, Hemel Hempstead is open Monday to Saturday 10am-3pm.

This project would not be possible without the support of Leader funding, Datum Point Construction and Rise architects.
