Introducing GDS Artschool

Living Magazines GDS Artschool montage

GDS Artschool is the collective name of classes run by Gary Dean Spencer at various venues across Herts, Bucks and Berks.

Gary has worked as an art teacher at various levels for over 20 years – including schools, colleges, and university level as well as many adult workshops and leisure classes. In his classes he brings together approaches to teaching painting that are broad and varied, aimed at both the experienced artist and the beginner. His strong interest in the contemporary and historical world of painting, as well as practical techniques, means that students discover more about painting in general, as well their own specific and personal development.

Classes and terms are structured yet informal, and all tasks are demonstrated as well as supported with one-to-one advice. He believes learning to be a painter should be engaging and entertaining, and at times, even thrilling! Whether you want to be a professional or are looking for an absorbing hobby, his enthusiasm for this massive and endlessly fascinating activity is guaranteed!

GDS Artschool currently has a course starting on Tuesday 4 June at Cecelia Hall Puttenham (near Tring and Aylesbury) on continuing on Tuesday mornings from 10am to 1pm. Any first class can be treated a free taster, so you can see whether it suits you. There are also a few spaces free at the Redbourn Leisure Centre (Near St Albans and Harpenden) Wednesday morning class.

Classes are usually booked in termly groups of 11 or 12 sessions – with a specific schedule for that term. Terms generally follow that of schools.

The cost is £20 per session. Refreshments, handouts, references and some materials are included in the price, though students are expected to obtain a basic art kit of their own. Advice can be given on this.
