Results from the 2021 Census were released on Tuesday 28 June by the Office for National Statistics and the data shows Hertfordshire has seen a considerable increase in population growth.

The figures highlighted in the report show the resident population of Hertfordshire has increased by 82,800 (7.4 %) since 2011.

They also show that no area in the county has seen a population decrease. Out of all the main districts, Watford scored the highest population increase, with 12,000 more people (13.3%) living there since 2011, while North Hertfordshire had the lowest increase of 6,100 people (4.8%).

The Census 2021, which was filled out by residents in spring 2021 to provide up-to-date and detailed population figures, as well as age and sex profiles, for the first time since 2011 when the last census was carried out, demonstrates clearly how local communities across Hertfordshire have changed and grown over the past decade.

It is a vital tool for the council, who will use the data recorded to help shape public services, support sustainable and responsible growth across the county and ensure Hertfordshire continues to be the county of opportunity for all.

The key headline statistics for 2021 are:

  • Estimated usual resident population of Hertfordshire 1,198,800. Increase of 82,800 (7.4%) since 2011.
  • Of the usual resident population 613,400 (51.2%) female and 585,400 (48.8%) male.

Deputy National Statistician, Pete Benton, said: ‘The census gives us the richest possible picture of society across England and Wales and is hugely important to inform decisions about all of our public services, from education to healthcare, and across the private sector,

‘The results from this census will give us a crucial baseline from which to monitor and manage change as we emerge from the pandemic.’
