Lidl Submits Plans for New Berkhamsted Store
Lidl has submitted plans for a modern supermarket off the High Street in Berkhamsted following a successful public consultation with over 2,000 respondents of which around 80% are in support.
Representing a multi-million-pound investment, the store would feature the discounter’s fan favourite bakery, much-loved Middle of Lidl, and customer toilets with baby-changing facilities. It will also create up to 40 new jobs, with colleagues receiving one of the highest rates of pay in the sector.
Respecting the character of the local area, the discounters’ plans include a bespoke designed store with a mixture of brickwork and rendering. Lidl has listened to feedback from residents and has made several improvements to the scheme. Outside, a new pedestrian footpath is now included off Billet Lane to improve accessibility. Following discussions with residents and stakeholders, new green planting has been added. There will also be ample parking for both cars and bicycles, including two electric vehicle chargers, whilst solar panels on the roof will help power the store.
Lidl’s public consultation unearthed significant community support for the plans. Over 2,000 people have responded so far, of which 80% have indicated support for Lidl’s proposals. Those in support stated that Berkhamsted ‘desperately needs this store’ which would bring ‘affordable shopping’ and ‘much needed jobs and economic growth’. Supporters also referenced that the new store would reduce travelling out of town to places like Hemel Hempstead for their regular shop.
Kate Bleloch, Regional Head of Property at Lidl GB, said: ‘Thank you to everyone who took part in our consultation to help make our plans meet the needs of the community in Berkhamsted. Your feedback is incredibly valuable, and our team have now incorporated these changes to submit plans for a Lidl store that’s right for the area.
‘Now that our plans have been submitted, we’re encouraging everyone to make their voices heard. Residents can now submit their views to Dacorum Borough Council to help secure this store, which would increase local shopping choice, create new jobs, and provide our high-quality products at the best value.’
