Local NHS urges eligible people to get vaccinated this winter

Living Magazines COVID-19 Booster Vaccines

NHS Central East is encouraging people across Hertfordshire to check whether they are eligible for free NHS vaccinations and take up the offer to help protect themselves this winter.

As we head into the colder months, viruses such as flu, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) spread more easily as people spend more time indoors and in close contact with others.

These illnesses can lead to serious complications, particularly for older people, pregnant women, young children and those with certain health conditions. Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to protect yourself, your family and your community. It can help reduce the risk of serious illness, hospital admission and pressure on NHS services during the winter months.

This winter, a range of free NHS vaccinations are available to help protect those most at risk from serious illness:

  • Flu vaccine: available for adults aged 65 and over, pregnant women, 2-3 year olds, school age children, people with certain health conditions, carers, homeless people and frontline health and care workers.
  • COVID-19 vaccine: available for people aged 75 and over, older adult care home residents and those with weakened immune systems.
  • RSV vaccine: available for pregnant women, adults aged 75 and over, residents in adult care homes and people aged 65 to 74 with a weakened immune system or certain long-term lung conditions.
  • Pneumococcal vaccine: available for people aged 65 and over and some people with underlying health conditions.

Depending on the vaccine, eligible people may be able to receive their vaccination at a GP practice, community pharmacy, maternity service, care home or local vaccination service. People eligible for flu or COVID-19 vaccinations can book through the NHS App or National Booking Service and may also receive an invitation from their GP practice.

People who think they may be eligible for an RSV or pneumococcal vaccine should contact their GP practice to check their eligibility and arrange an appointment.

Cali Makewell, Strategic Vaccination Lead for NHS Central East, said: ‘Winter viruses such as flu, COVID-19 and RSV can cause serious illness, especially for people who are more vulnerable to infection. Getting vaccinated is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect yourself and those around you.

‘We encourage everyone who is eligible to take up the offer of their free NHS vaccinations. By getting vaccinated, you are helping to protect your own health while also helping to reduce pressure on NHS services this winter.’

People can find out more about winter vaccinations, check their eligibility and learn how to book on the NHS winter vaccinations webpage Winter vaccinations and winter health – NHS.
