Memorial Gardens star in short film
A Tring actor and film-maker has produced a film aimed at raising awareness around dementia.
Dan Holloway, who runs D82 productions, said: ‘Thanks to the Dacorum Film Office [part of Dacorum Borough Council], we managed to film entirely in Tring Memorial Gardens. It was the perfect location; such a beautiful place to work in.’
Always a Joy has a very personal connection for Dan: ‘The main character, Joy, is based on my late grandmother who had dementia. I wanted to create something that reflected her as a person; a warm-hearted, compassionate woman who would nurture with affection and encouragement, and share lovely tales from her life.
‘The character of James was a reflection of myself, as there would be many times where I would have the same conversations over and over again with my grandmother, but for her in that moment it was the first time. I wanted to showcase a delicate way to talk with someone who has dementia as it is so awful and cruel – just being kind and enjoying the conversations with them can speak volumes.
‘I wanted to create something that people can enjoy for its narrative but also find a connection within the story. A connection that may spark an interest in looking towards support if they need it, to those they may know who might also need support, and to raise awareness where I can. The film was created with no budget but with a truly dedicated and wonderful team behind it.’
Always a Joy received an honourable mention at the Rob Knox Film Festival. Dan’s latest short film is quite different. Hollowed Dread, a paranormal horror, is making its way around film festivals and should release later this year. He is also in development with his next film, a military drama.
Dan is also heading off on a UK tour, performing as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz – Adults Only! (pantomime), which will be at the Broadway Cinema & Theatre in Letchworth on 28 March.
