More than 50 people had anti-tamper screws fitted to their vehicles at a special crime prevention ‘PL4TE S4FE’ event in Dacorum at the weekend.

Officers from the Dacorum Safer Neighbourhood Team were thrilled to find a queue of drivers already in the car park at Berkhamsted Leisure Centre in Douglas Gardens on Saturday morning.

‘We were so pleased that so many drivers took the time to come a see us on such a rainy morning,’ said Safer Neighbourhood Sergeant Sarah Anderson. ‘It’s clear that local motorists appreciate our efforts to prevent their vehicles’ registration plates from being stolen by fitting anti-tamper screws.

‘Theft of car number plates is both hugely inconvenient, and we know that stolen plates can subsequently be used by criminals for offences like bilking (theft of petrol) or evading speed camera fines.’

Officers also gave out home security and crime prevention advice to help keep homes and vehicles more secure from opportunist thieves and signed residents up to the online neighbourhood watch scheme OWL.

Sgt Anderson added: ‘We will be holding more crime prevention events in the coming months so keep an eye on our Facebook page for more information.’
