South West Herts Conservative Association have selected Peter Matthews as the Berkhamsted Candidate for the Hertfordshire County Council Elections to be held on 6 May 2021.

A long-time resident of Berkhamsted, Peter has served both as a Town and Dacorum Borough Councillor. In May 2014 he was appointed Mayor attending over 100 civic events during his term of office. He has wide experience in planning, transport and  environmental matters as well as overview and scrutiny roles at Dacorum Borough Council. During his time as a Town Councillor Peter championed the wider use of Berkhamsted Castle and, with the support of English Heritage, staged its first theatrical performance raising £3000 for charity. Peter is a trustee of the Berkhamsted Castle Trust and hopes to see more use of the castle as a cultural centre. Peter continues his support of the Friends of St Peter’s and their Rectory Lane Cemetery and is a trustee of the Friends.

At County Council Peter will be an active champion for Berkhamsted. His immediate concerns  include the over-development of the town, its stretched infrastructure, healthcare provision for residents, supporting business in the town especially keeping our High Street vibrant and resisting the depletion of our historic chalk streams such as the Bulbourne.

Peter has been a research scientist with international computer companies writing a number of scientific papers, presenting at international conferences and publishing three books. Now retired, his interest in automation and self-driving vehicles keeps him in touch with worldwide research colleagues. He is married with one daughter.
