Pizzaiolo Takes on The Old Mill Pub
The Old Mill pub in Berkhamsted has reopened after a £300,000 makeover from pub owner Greene King Pub Partners and new licensee Claude Camilleri.
Claude, a Pizzaiolo, will be serving his pizzas, which have been ranked as amongst the best in the world by La Enciclopedia Della Pizza, at the pub.
The Old Mill is the first pub the Pizzaiolo has opened and his first hospitality business in the UK, having operated two well-known pizzerias – called Margos – in Malta for over 17 years.
He will be serving the same authentic Neapolitan pizza he serves in his pizzerias at The Old Mill, but with an English twist – using organic buffalo mozzarella from Hampshire and charcuterie including hams and sausages all prepared at the pub using British pork and beef.
As a pub, The Old Mill serves an impressive range of beers and other drinks. It serves Italian lager Birra Moretti, as well as Icebreaker Pale Ale, Amstel, Orchard Thieves cider, Guinness and cask ales. The pub also has an impressive wine offer to complement its great food, with all but one of its wines coming from European vineyards. It also serves a range of spirits including limoncello as well as non-alcoholic and soft drink options.
Ahead of its reopening to the public, The Old Mill had undergone a £300,000 makeover which included state of the art equipment.
As part of this makeover, the pub now features a deli for pub goers to buy supplies from to take home with them, or for local residents to use as a local deli shop. The deli also features a bakery which serves fresh baked goods using organic flour from Shipton Mills, which is also used for pizza dough.
Claude Camilleri, licensee for The Old Mill pub, said: ‘When I visited Berkhamsted before, I fell in love with The Old Mill pub. As soon as the opportunity came to take it on, I just knew I had to pounce on it!
‘I love the great British pub and making amazing pizza, so combining these two passions together is a dream come true. With great pizza, great beer and a great pub, what’s not to like? And even if you don’t want pizza or a beer, we have a great deli and bakery where you can buy things for home!
‘I am new to Berkhamsted, but everyone here has been so welcoming. The local community is amazing, and I cannot wait to welcome everyone into my pub!’
Andrew Milne, Business Development Manager at Greene King Pub Partners, said: ‘I can tell you first-hand that Claude’s pizzas are in a different league! He knows his beer too and hospitality is in his DNA. The people of Berkhamsted are going to have a real gem of a pub on their doorstep. Plus, the added bonus of a deli and bakery within it!’
