Proposed Development Berkhamsted High Street
In 2023, Sorbon Estates acquired a prime location on Berkhamsted’s High Street, offering an opportunity to rejuvenate this central area.
If you’re familiar with the area, the existing buildings lack architectural integrity and really don’t capture Berkhamsted’s unique character. The view from Water Lane Car Park is unappealing, and the walkway connecting the train station, schools, and High Street could benefit from a more welcoming atmosphere.
Their proposal for 168-192 High Street seeks to enrich the town centre’s character and vibrancy by introducing modern amenities that honour Berkhamsted’s historical charm.
On the High Street, their aims are to:
- Revitalise the outdated buildings with a high-quality design that honours Berkhamsted’s heritage
- Enhance the High Street with attractive ground-floor shopfronts
- Introduce a new leisure space for community enjoyment
- Add contemporary residential apartments
Whilst fronting Water Lane car park, they aim to:
- Transform and enhance the view from Water Lane car park
- Create an inviting public courtyard
- Enhance the landscape with new greenery to boost biodiversity
- Add a new mixed-use building featuring modern retail space

A public consultation for this major new development on Berkhamsted High Street will take place on Thursday 26 September between 6 and 9pm at Berkhamsted Town Hall.
