Rectory Lane Cemetery Wins Fourth Green Flag Community Award

Rectory Lane Cemetery in Berkhamsted achieves the prestigious Green Flag Award – the international quality mark for parks and green spaces – yet again.
The volunteers of Rectory Lane Cemetery are celebrating after receiving a Green Flag Community Award for the space they look after in the centre of the town – one of only seven cemeteries in the UK to win the Community Award.
The news that Rectory Lane Cemetery has achieved the accreditation – the international quality mark for parks and green spaces – is testament to the hard work and dedication of the volunteer team and part-time ranger who care for the green space so that visitors and residents alike can enjoy it.
Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, Paul Todd MBE, said: ‘I would like to congratulate everyone involved at Rectory Lane Cemetery on achieving a Green Flag Award.
‘Rectory Lane Cemetery is a vital green space for communities in Dacorum to socialise, enjoy nature, for children to play safely and it provides important opportunities for users to improve their physical and mental health.’
The Cemetery’s Ranger, Kate Campbell, said: ‘I’m absolutely delighted for our volunteer team. It is a labour of love to maintain our three acres all year with regular work parties mowing the grass, establishing wildflower areas, welcoming visitors and sustaining the special nature of this space for the whole community to enjoy. We’re a small team and would love to have others join us. As well as work parties, individual volunteers create and maintain beautiful grave gardens – and there are many more which could be adopted.’
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
