Rennie Grove Peace seeking volunteers

RGP volunteer Ann McCrimmon

January is the perfect time for fresh starts and meaningful resolutions. If you’re looking for a way to give back this new year, Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care has volunteer opportunities that may be for you.

Volunteering with a hospice charity may conjure up images of holding hands or making cups of tea. While these things are vital, there’s much more to volunteering with a hospice charity than you might realise. From working with patients and families to helping generate income in one of the charity’s shops and supporting a head office function, the charity has over 100 different volunteer roles available. There really is something to suit everybody’s interests, skills and availability.

The charity’s retail and trading department is responsible for generating around 41% of the total fundraised income each year. In order to do this, the charity’s network of 32 High Street shops rely on volunteer shop assistants to keep the rails stocked and the tills ringing up to 7 days per week.

‘Customers often want to chat about their experience of the care provided by Rennie Grove Peace and they always speak so highly of their experiences, which makes me proud to be contributing to the good work that hospices do.’

Dawn volunteers as part of the Rennie Grove Peace online selling team. She says: ‘On a typical day, I help with listing fashion items for sale on the charity’s eBay and Vinted stores. This involves taking photographs, researching the item, and writing a description before listing for sale. I decided to volunteer with Rennie Grove Peace because I had some knowledge of the excellent work they do, and they cared for a family member at the end of his life.

‘I enjoy working with a team, and the listing process is interesting. I like the fact that my contribution helps those who desperately need support, in difficult circumstances.’

Rachel Turvey, volunteering development advisor at Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care, says: ‘January is the perfect time to think about signing up for a new volunteer opportunity. At Rennie Grove Peace our volunteers outnumber staff by nearly 5:1 so it really is true to say that we couldn’t deliver our vital hospice services without the local people who give up their time to support us.

‘Every single volunteer role makes a difference to the care we can provide to patients. Whether it’s supporting the IT team to keep vital systems running, packaging and dispatching items sold on our ebay shop to generate income or working directly with patients, every role directly impacts the care that local people receive.

‘We have over 100 different roles and are always open to new ideas. If you have an interest, a specialist skill to offer or are just curious about how volunteering might fit into your life, please get in touch today and we would be delighted to chat!’
