Residents across Dacorum are being invited to take part in a free community programme called Sustainable Streets Together, a community-led programme that helps neighbours come together street by street to cut household bills, reduce waste and feel more connected to their neighbours.

Delivered locally by Grand Union Community Energy (GUCE) in partnership with Dacorum Borough Council, Sustainable Streets Together Dacorum brings small groups of neighbours together for a series of friendly, home-based workshops focused on practical, everyday actions they can take together.

Participants learn simple ways to limit heat loss, reduce energy use, travel more sustainably and cut household waste, helping households’ lower costs while building stronger local connections.

How it works

Neighbourhood groups typically meet every 2-3 weeks in each other’s homes or shared community spaces, guided by a trained GUCE facilitator.

Sessions cover practical topics, including:

  • Improving home energy efficiency
  • Cutting food and household waste
  • Travelling more sustainably
  • Supporting local nature and biodiversity

Sustainable Streets Together Dacorum is now open for sign-ups. The programme is free to take part in and no prior knowledge or experience is required, with materials including free energy saving kits, free thermal images for your home, and ongoing support provided by the GUCE team.

The programme can also be adapted for workplaces and organisations, including charities, to support staff or volunteer groups in managing energy use and reducing costs in shared spaces.

Sustainable Streets was first delivered by GUCE in Three Rivers, where it has already supported residents to respond proactively by taking control of the costs they can influence, sharing and learning together with their neighbours.

Councillor Caroline Smith-Wright, the Council’s Portfolio Holder for Climate and Environment, said: ‘At a time when many households are feeling financial pressure, we are investing in practical support that makes a genuine difference. Sustainable Streets Together gives residents the tools, knowledge and confidence to lower their energy use, reduce waste and potentially save hundreds of pounds a year. It’s a win for household budgets and a win for our environment.’

Sarah Burgess, Sustainable Streets Facilitator and Director of GUCE, said: ‘I love seeing the groups develop their own identity throughout this programme. Each one is unique and focuses on what is most important to them to ensure everyone taking part gets the most out of it. and we’re excited to bring it to Dacorum.’
