A trio of young entrepreneurs have been busy selling their homemade wares on a stall at Berkhamsted Farmers Market in the High Street.

Lula Spivack, 11, Amelia Metcalfe, 11, and Maya Ivanov, 12, all attend Tring Park School for the Performing Arts, and live in villages around Berkhamsted.

The latest business idea for the girls, who were already selling cakes at the monthly Sunday market, came from Lula’s uncle, Mark Lewis. Mark had acquired a large roll of anti-EMF fabric [designed to shield against or reduce exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from devices such as mobile phones and Wi-Fi routers] and noticed it was easy to sew.

He suggested they try making anti-radiation mobile phone pouches.

Lula told Berkhamsted Living: ‘We sold all eight of the anti-radiation pouches we made by hand. People seemed to love them, and they work really well if the phone is completely sealed inside. Next time, we’ll make them a little bigger so they fit larger smartphones.

‘We want to keep selling cakes and handmade items because we enjoy baking, and it feels easy and fun. We also love sewing and creating. Everyone responded really positively to us – maybe because we’re younger.

‘To have an idea and just put it into action isn’t actually that difficult. Sometimes it’s hard not to be on a screen, but it’s much more fun to be making something. The market mornings are great fun, and we always earn a good amount of money, which makes it even better!’

The market is held on the third Sunday of every month in the community area Mark organises, Nourish at Berkhamsted Farmers Market.
