VE Day, Thursday 8 May 2025

On Thursday 8 May (10.45am), the Council will be holding a joint commemorative service with the Royal British Legion (RBL) at Boxmoor War Memorial, to honour and pay tribute to the Second World War generation from across the UK and Commonwealth.

All are welcome to join in commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

The council will also be installing two 80th anniversary ‘Tommy Statues’ which will be placed in Tring Memorial Gardens and in the Walled Gardens, Gadebridge Park, as permanent reminders of our nation’s fallen soldiers and those who continue to serve.

Planning a VE Day Street party?

Thursday 8 May 2025 marks 80 years since Victory in Europe (VE) Day when the Second World War came to an end in Europe. Hosting a street party is a great way for everyone to come together to commemorate this special anniversary.

If you’re planning a street party on a public road, you’ll need permission from Hertfordshire County Council to close the road. Most requests are free if it’s on a residential street and doesn’t affect a bus route.

Applications for VE Day street parties (for the first or second week in May) must be made to Hertfordshire County Council, which normally requires 6 weeks’ notice, but will continue to process applications where possible in shorter timescales.

You can make your application on Hertfordshire County Council’s website.
