Volunteers needed for Berkhamsted half marathon

Berkorun

Looking to get involved with something local? How about volunteering for the legendary Berkhamsted Half Marathon?

The Pepper Foundation has been working with Berkhamsted Rotary to support the Berko Half for many years. It takes a lot of volunteers to manage a course run by thousands people every year.

The Pepper Foundation is looking for volunteer marshals to help on Sunday 1 March 2026.

Marshalling is an important role and mostly involves helping keep runners safe and the event running smoothly. Typical duties include:

  • Being positioned at a key point on the route or at a road crossing
  • Politely advising traffic to wait or divert while runners pass
  • Following guidance from a Lead Marshal and watching for lead and sweep vehicles
  • Wearing a high-visibility tabard and keeping your phone on for emergency contact (we’ll issue hi-vis and we also issue shortwave radios to Lead Marshalls)
  • Encouraging runners as they go past – it genuinely makes a difference

Safety always comes first, and you’ll never be expected to take risks or put yourself in harm’s way.

Time commitment: Most roles are around 2 to 3.5 hours, depending on location and role.

Roles available:

  • Lead Marshals – overseeing a point and coordinating activity
  • Marshals – supporting runners and managing crossings

If you would like to get involved, please email KNicolas@pepper.org.uk or Raj@pepper.org.uk for more information.
