Walk the walk for charity in May
The annual Berkhamsted Walk began in 1968 and since then has raised more than £320,000 for The Children’s Society, a charity dedicated to supporting children in need throughout the UK.
The event, which is held on Sunday 10 May this year, has always been a community affair – set up and run by members of the Berkhamsted committee with a huge amount of help from willing volunteers.
The start and finish point are on a site owned by Berkhamsted School, and the event is supported with finish-line cakes by the High Street’s Gail’s Bakery.
With more than 300 participants in the past couple of years alone, the Berkhamsted Walk goes from strength to strength, and has become a popular fixture on the local calendar.
A cornerstone of the event is supporting other local causes – most recently, it welcomed the mobile coffee shop The Blue Tangerine Café. Run by young people with special educational needs, the café was set up by local schools where students requiring additional support can thrive. The Thunderdell Explorer Scout division has also run a breakfast grill for the walkers. Staffed by the Scouts themselves, it has raised money for their activities both at home and abroad.
There’s three routes to choose from – 6, 12 and 18 miles – and dogs on leads are also welcome.
