You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or two…
On 17-18 August authentic Victorian characters will be bringing to life the less savoury aspects of Victorian history in a fun family-friendly event at Chiltern Open Air Museum. Look out for shady characters including the rat catcher and his rats; street urchins; doctor, rogues and vagabonds.
‘The Ragged Victorians’ are an award-winning living history group re-enacting the lower classes of Victorian England, providing an authentic and entertaining impression of what life was like for the majority of the population.
Re-enactors from the Victorian British Army Rifle Brigade Regiment will also be part of the event representing the 3rd Battalion at home in England in the early 1850s. Encamped within a small country village, with a view to exercise the Battalion and attempt to grab some recruits from the local populace. It has also been rumoured that the local peelers may also appreciate some support from the Regiment due to reports of some down and out characters hanging around the cottages and public houses!
This is a great fun and educational day out for the family: pack a picnic or treat yourself to some food in the cafe and indulge in a bit of history, but watch out for pickpockets!
