Community spirit shines at Footballathon
More than 40 mixed teams and hundreds of boys and girls from schools across Berkhamsted and the surrounding area came together to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the St Thomas More Summer Fayre and Footballathon on Friday 12 June.
Held in glorious sunshine, the event saw 41 mixed teams from Year 2 to Year 6 take part in an afternoon of football, fun and friendship, alongside a vibrant summer fayre enjoyed by families and supporters. Players were praised for their excellent sportsmanship and behaviour throughout the tournament.
Organised by the St Thomas More PTA, the Summer Fayre and Footballathon remain the school’s biggest annual fundraising event, with dozens of volunteers helping run the football, BBQ, bar, raffle, stalls and family activities.
This year’s event was made even more special by the return of former pupils, parents and organisers from the original Footballathon 25 years ago, many of whom got straight back involved, including refereeing matches, supporting teams and helping with the wider celebrations throughout the day.
Alex Sallis, Executive Headteacher at St Thomas More, said: ‘The Summer Fayre and Footballathon are wonderful examples of what can be achieved when a community comes together. It was fantastic to see so many children enjoying themselves, representing their schools so positively and creating memories
that will last for years to come.’
The Summer Fayre and Footballathon perfectly reflect the ethos of St Thomas More: bringing people together, creating opportunities for children and fostering a strong sense of belonging. Proudly serving the Berkhamsted community, the school welcomes families of all faiths and none.
Following the success of this year’s event, St Thomas More is encouraging local families considering primary school places to come and visit the school and experience its warm, welcoming community for themselves. Find out more at stmore.herts.sch.uk.
