Berkhamsted Castle Fields Tree Shadows

Dr James Moir, a Trustee of the Berkhamsted Castle Trust which is leading the fundraising campaign to secure the future of Castle Fields, spoke to the Berkhamsted Citizens Association on 19 February in the Town Hall Berkhamsted.

Berkhamsted Castle Trust secured a loan of £500,000 from a local benefactor to purchase the land, and now have two years in which to repay it, as you may have seen in our previous articles:

James explained how the fields had narrowly escaped being auctioned off for development last year, and why they are so important:

  • they are of exceptional historical significance as the place where the siege of the Castle occurred in 1216
  • they later formed a part of the huge former Royal Deer Park attached to the Castle
  • they form a principal wildlife corridor for Berkhamsted
  • they are such a vital public space, which Berkhamsted lacks – a great place for all the community to enjoy the stunning views and take part in recreational activities.

James ended the talk by suggesting  ways in which the BCA could support the campaign.

You can see his suggestions, and the full talk, in the video.
